Service and Maintenance

Regular servicing and maintenance is essential to prolong the life of your equipment and keep it working at maximum efficiency. Operatives have a tendancy to use equipment until it fails and then seek a repair, which in most cases will be expensive and in some cases not financially viable. This to a large extent can be avoided by regular service and maintenance which in comparison to a repair would be relatively cheap. Not only as it will prolong the life of the machine, but it can also limit down time due to broken machines as servicing can be arranged for a suitable time for you.

A dirty clogged filter as shown in the images causes a reduced air flow into the engine affecting the fuel air mix. This will not only reduce the performance of the tool but also have adverse effects on parts of the engine due to fluctuations in the design running temperature and the chance of incorrect fuel mixture can lead to overheating, as can incorrect tuning. This can lead to the piston damage shown in the image below. Also failure to use 2stroke oil in the fuel can lead to piston damage as seen below.

Piston damage due to overheating, Possibly caused by poor mixture or need for tuning

Piston damage due to fuel used without 2stroke oil. The oil is essential in a 2 stroke engine

Breakdown Repairs

At Essex Tool Repairs we offer a repair service, that will get your equipment back in use and earning money as quick as possible.
We will diagnose the fault with your equipment and produce an estimate for parts and labour, so it is very helpful if you can give as much detail concerning the breakdown as possible.
This will have a duel effect. First - it will help to ensure that the correct diagnosis is made without any surprises. Second - it will effectively speed up the estimate process thus allowing more time for repairs to be undertaken.
You will be contacted with the estimate so you can make the decision on whether to go ahead. Depending on parts availability we endeavour to return your repaired equipment to you within one week of receiving the go ahead.

In the image is a Stihl TS410 brought to me because the exhaust had fallen off and the water way through the guard adjustment handle had broken. The operative continued to use the saw regardless of the noise coming from the exhaust as it worked its way off. As a result of this one bolt was missing and the other had snapped off in the head.
I replaced the cylinder as the bolt could not be cleanly removed from the hole, fitted a new adjustment handle and two rubber feet.

The image shows a Hilti TE905 brought to me with no hammer action. My first thought was that the hammer piston had broken. On inspection the issue became clear. The breaker had not been serviced for some time and the oil inside had solidified.
I stripped the chuck, piston and cylinder assemblies and cleaned all the parts in the parts washer. I then rebuilt the breaker using the Hilti oil. Fortunately for the owner the seals were all ok so it was a relatively inexpensive repair compared to what it could have been.

Refurbishment and Restoration

Some tools are worked continuously until parts start to fall off or engines fail or leak or both. This doesn't always mean that the machine has come to the end of its life. At Essex tool repairs we relish the challenge of returning these machine to servicable condition, as can be seen from the following example.

left is the King Cable Puller in a sorry condition. The legs have broken off the exhaust shielding has fallen off and the engine has dropped its oil. Bottom left shows the engine on the bench. After some drilling and tapping, making a gasket and thread locking the bolts, as well as a carb strip down, the engine issues are cured. Bottom right shows the machine back on its feet, after I welded them back on. I also made a bracket to re-mount the exhaust shield, fitted a new cut off switch and service the engine.
